Authority of December 1797, Half-Dollar (valued at Four Shillings and Three-Halfpence, or Five-and-a-Half Bitts), VICEROYALTY OF PERU, Charles III, a cut half segment of an 8 Réales, 1789IJ, Lima, obv. countermarked with SV monogram thrice raised within a shaped indent, 12.08g/186.4 gr (Prid. 1, this coin [Sale, lot 345, this coin]; KM. 4.1). Coin fine but surfaces somewhat corroded, countermarks better, extremely rare as a full weight specimen

As the plugged half-dollar segments are often less than the 168 grain minimum weight standard specified in the December 1797 Act, it is likely that the action of plugging and stamping these lighter weight segments took place at some later date, but the documentation authorising this action has not been traced
