THE LATE ROBINSON S. BROWN JR COLLECTION (Part II - Middlesex)
In accordance with DNW house style, this collection has been catalogued by location rather than by denomination as in Dalton and Hamer; in this way pieces relative to each other and specific to a particular locality are easier to find. Tokens issued by named individuals are listed alphabetically, preceding those struck by manufacturers for specious gain. The opportunity has been taken to record the weight and die-axis of each piece, information which might not only help pinpoint pieces from the collection in future years should original tickets and envelopes be discarded, but is also increasingly relevant to those who study the series in depth.
This portion of the collection includes a significant number of pieces of a medallic nature, grouped under ‘Middlesex’ by Dalton and Hamer perhaps, as David Dykes has postulated, because of pressure from their publishers. Largely the work of the manufacturers of the tokens, it was perhaps for this reason that they were deemed worthy of publication by the contemporary authors of the time, in particular James Conder and Charles Pye, in whose footsteps James Atkins, Richard Dalton and Samuel Hamer have trod. Devotees of D&H have continued to pursue them, as indeed did many of those early collectors, but because they are not tokens per se they have been separated in this catalogue from the main group of London-based issues.
