we watch the Bureau of Land Management’s choices regarding wild horse management. For most of us, it’s been ripping our hearts out.

Some have described the roundups as “massacres.” On Facebook, it’s called a Mustang Holocaust. I don’t know what the answer is, but like that horrific chapter in human history, we must not let a pernicious trickle (two foals dead here, a dozen horses dead there, a few hundred in interment) become a wave of final solution. As we go to press, an injunction has reined in one roundup until summer’s grueling heat has eased. But it is a pause, not a reprieve.
Come November, you can vote and exercise your voice. Again. Right now, you should let your representatives know where you stand on managing this living symbol of our American heritage. Our article in Issue 63 (Oct/Nov 09), on the latest findings in mustang behavior, collected by the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros, suggests that we all still have a lot to learn about wild horses.
I promise Holistic Horse will stay abreast of the big issues so you remain an informed advocate. Please sign up for our weekly eNewsletter, and join us on Facebook for news on the issues that impact our lives.
Meanwhile, this issue’s articles will help us promote our horse’s balance. Dr. Juliet Getty’s “Feeding in Sync with Instincts” (p4) looks at achieving that inner balance by feeding to improve behavior. Shari Frederick’s “Detoxify Your Horse” (p14) can keep that positive energy flowing, as will the tips for supporting equine detox with acupressure (p18) from Amy Snow and Nancy Zidonis.
Staying balanced requires healthy hooves, so farriers Laura Florence and Bryan Farcus offer a smart Q&A on thrush (p6). Did you know farriers created sugardine? Keep reading, and you’ll learn healthy hooves are as close as your kitchen pantry (p8).
Livelihoods and eco-systems went out of balance after BP’s Gulf Oil Spill. Josh Nelson brings energy consumption and use back to the barn with “Natural Gas, Drilling Risks and the Environment” (p24). Betsy Furth’s “A Laying On of Hands & Heart” (p20) with Pam Fisher, who found inner balance working in holistic equine rehabilitation, will inspire you.
Finally, please balance concern with action and speak up when you witness or suspect animal abuse. Even on vacation. For rental horses, too many dude ranches are duds when it comes to proper care. Not sure when or what to report? Let Leith Emrich walk you through Rental Horse Welfare Law 101 (p10). You’ll be the better for it.
May you and your horse find a more perfect balance together, L.A. Pomeroy
