Manhattan College awarded grant Manhattan College has been awarded
a $661,000 grant from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to install a modular green roof for New York Hospital Queens in Flushing. Of the five green project grant recipients, Manhattan College received the highest amount of funding. The DEP’s $2.6 million Flushing and
Gowanus Green Infrastructure Grant Initiative program was created to decrease the amount of storm water and wastewater diverted into New York City’s wa- terways. Toward this end, the
program funds green infrastructure projects for capturing storm water runoff. Man- hattan College will partner with HDR Engineering, an architectural, engineer- ing and consulting firm with locations throughout North America, to design and install 20,000 square feet of modular green roof. Manhattan College’s School of Engi-
neering associate professor Scott Lowe is leading investigator for the project, and the school’s engineering students will be involved at every stage. Once the roof is in place, students will gather and analyze data over a four-year period to determine how much water is being captured. "Manhattan College engineers are
trained and committed to integrating green practices throughout New York City, and the grant project will allow our faculty and students to not only assist in improving the city’s water stewardship, but design, install and monitor the entire process for four years,” said Tim J. Ward, dean of the School of Engineering. The DEP manages New York City’s
water supply, serving nine million resi- dents and supplying one billion gallons of water every day.
