Schervier Nursing Care
Center to hold blood drive Schervier Nursing Care Center is host-
ing a blood drive for the New York Blood Center on Thursday, August 19th from 1:00-5:30 p.m. in Schervier's Community Hall. Schervier, part of Bon Secours New York Health System, is located at 2975 Independence Avenue between 231st and 227th Streets in Riverdale. This blood drive helps supply blood to neighboring hospitals for patients' use. Blood donations drop to critically low levels in the summer months, and there is also an urgent need for blood donors with diverse racial backgrounds. Every two seconds, someone needs blood, and summer marks the height of the trauma season-the busiest time of year for emer- gency rooms and trauma centers. Type O-negative blood-called the universal donor because O- blood can be trans- fused into anyone, is especially needed. So please take this opportunity to help save lives by donating your blood. At this Schervier blood drive, in addition to the traditional system of donating a pint of blood, the Alyx System will also be avail- able, allowing individuals to donate two complete transfusion units of red blood cells at one time. Red blood cells are the component of blood most frequently transfused. In whatever way you wish to
donate your blood, to schedule an ap- pointment, please contact the New York Blood Center at
nybloodcenter.org or call them at 800-933-2566. At the same time, individuals who wish
to be included in the bone marrow registry can get the inside of their cheek swabbed and help save a life through the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. Information about Schervier and Bon
Secours New York Health System may be obtained at
www.scherviercares.org or by calling 718-548-1700.
Michael Mendel exhibits
watercolors at RSS Riverdale Senior Services will be exhibit-
ing watercolor paintings of award-winning graphic designer, Michael Mendel, during the month of august. The gallery is located at 2600 Netherland Avenue, in the Century Building and is available for viewing Mon- day-Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mendel is a Bronx resident, who was born
in Berlin, Germany and fled the wrath of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime with his parents in 1938. After a year and a half in Cuba he and his family emigrated to the United States. Mendel enjoyed more than 30-plus
years as an album cover designer in the recorded music industry. After working for Columbia records, he went on to open his own art studio in New York.
Mr. Mendel started seriously painting
just three years ago and his work has been shown at the National Arts Club and the Washington Square Outdoor Art Show as well as winning a prize in the recent RSS Vintage Artists Gallery last May. The theme of many of his watercolors is the New York/Bronx experience. For more information on the exhibit, call 718-884-5900.
Mr. Met/Kid's Day at The
Kingsbridge Financial Center What better way to end the summer
than by visiting the Citibank Branch in Kingsbridge on Saturday August 21st to take part in the days activities. Not only will we have Mr. Met on hand to entertain us but also various other events: * Face painting and cotton candy from
12-2 PM * Members from U.S.K.TaeKwonDo
School who will be providing us a dem- onstration of their martial art skills * a live performance by Jeremy Bar-
Illan who will be playing your favorite childhood songs on his guitar. Citibank will also be providing infor-
mation throughout the day on various topics such as mortgages (Mortgage Con- sultant on hand all day) as well as hand- outs from the Kingsbridge-Riverdale-Van Cortlandt Development Corporation
about energy efficiency audits for busi- ness owners and free distribution of the Restaurant guide. In keeping with adding value to our
community the bank will also be distribut- ing back to school supplies in the form of Notebooks with Recycled Eco-Friendly Pen and note pads made from recycled paper. If you live in the area tell your friends and family and if you don't, visit the Kingsbridge community and see what the buzz is about. Don't miss out on this great event!
