On course for more learning
Bridgwater College offers a National Award in Horticulture – an ideal qualifi cation for people who want an understanding of the advanced principles and practices of horticulture with a view to gaining employment in the industry or progressing to higher education.
The practical elements of the course are delivered in the atmospheric setting of an ancient walled garden and state of the art glasshouse and includes the use and access to specialist equipment.
Course tutors and lecturers are all active members of the Royal Horticultural Society and students are encouraged to participate in building show gardens.
One of the UK’s foremost providers of specialist training in garden design is the Garden Design School which holds its award-winning Garden Design Diploma course at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, annually. This year’s programme commences in September 2010. The intensive part-time diploma equips students with all of the practical, technical and commercial knowledge and skills needed to become confi dent, practicing garden designers.
Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset offers a Foundation Degree in Historic Gardens & Heritage Horticulture as part of its growing commitment to education. The course is a fl agship one for the popular garden based on three years part time or two years full time.
Hestercombe Gardens and Yeovil College have also linked up to offer these new courses in horticulture based at Hestercombe.
All students have full access to the Study Centre at Yeovil College with a wide range of books and computer links. You also have free student access to the gardens.
But away from the career minded on to gardeners who just want to improve their day to day skills the range of courses on offer to passionate gardeners is immense - using the specifi c skills of experienced gardeners and tutors or bringing experts into special locations.
The beauty of the many courses available is their variety. Sue Gibson runs popular courses for seasoned gardeners and novices alike where the aim is to help you achieve your dream garden. So for example you can learn to design your own garden, plan borders and use professional organic gardening techniques. Most of her courses are run from Slimbridge, Gloucestershire.
Binham Grange is a unique Jacobean house of great antiquity and is used as the setting for specialist courses. This year Binham is arranging a variety of courses and programmes including Sarah Raven leading a course on The Cutting Garden on Friday 10th September at £75 per person. Monica Horne leads a special days course on 22nd July on fl ower painting.
