Planting a garden is an ’expression of personality’
Sally Gregson reflects from her garden alongside the River Axe that gardening remains both one of this country’s greatest assets and one of the last popular art forms.
If there is one pleasure to be gained from a recession it is that we shall all be spending more time at home in our gardens rather than enduring the nightmare of airports, hot dusty children, and sticky sandy beaches.
One of the greatest assets of this country is the beauty of our gardens.
Visitors come from all over the world to visit the famous ones. And if they pick up the ‘Gardens Open Yellow Book’ they realise that small private gardens are at least as lovely, and often even more interesting than the bigger ones.

Gardening must be one of the last popular art forms. Few of us these days spend time painting, writing poetry or making music. But for many planting a garden is an expression of their personality and taste and success lies in conveying that to others. And its evolution and transience ensure that those gardeners are always seeking to improve their work year on year.
Every summer Peter and I leaf through my copy of the Yellow Book and find a garden or two that we have not visited before. Then, armed with a small digital camera and a notebook, we set off in search of inspiration: new plant combinations, different solutions to the eternal and infernal problems of vine weevils, snails and rabbits; and good cream teas.
In one garden last year we came across a delightful maze made of brick pavers set into the lawn. It was alive with children of all ages working their way into and out of the middle without standing on the grass.
Most of the roses at Henley Mill are those that flower only at mid- summer and then make new growth that will flower next year
And I couldn’t help thinking that if the gaps between the paths were filled with a meadow mix of annual flowers and
