Moms and Babies Needed for FGCU Language Study

by the Infant Development Lab at Florida Gulf Coast University on early speech development. Each pair will be together at all times and information will be shared after completion of the research. After initial consultations, mothers


and babies will be asked to participate in two 45-minute sessions—when the infant is between 7 and 9 months old and when he or she is 1 year old. In both sessions, mothers and their babies will play with toys while being observed by researchers. The study, funded by the March


of Dimes and the school’s Faculty Development Fund, is spearheaded by Dr. Lakshmi Gogate, a developmental psychologist, associate professor and director of the school’s lab, and post- doctoral fellow Madhavilatha Maganti. It is investigating how babies under- stand the relationship between moth- ers’ words, actions and the objects that are presented to them, and how babies combine them before beginning word comprehension.
