THE HORSE GAZETTE ask the vet riding after a colic?

have to wait to ride a horse that just had colic? Is there a time frame to not be riding them? What other precautions do you take? – Thanks Laci, submitted via HorseGazette.com.

Dear Laci,

after an episode of colic de- pends on a multitude of factors, most importantly recommenda- tions made by a veterinarian af- ter examining the horse. Other factors to consider would be how severe the colic episode was, the duration of the epi- sode, potential causes and what treatments were required. Gen- erally speaking for a mild to moderate colic episode that re- sponds to basic medical therapy I usually recommend a 3-5 day period of restricted exercise. – Dr. Symm

There is a significant lapse in the time between when these questions are sent in and when the answers appear in the Gazette newspaper and online. If you feel your horse needs to be seen by a veterinarian do not wait for a response. Call a reputable equine veterinarian in your area and let him/her examine the horse!

I also have a couple of yearlings and I don’t have this problem with. What would cause this? Thanks, Sherrie, submitted via HorseGazette.com

limbs in some horses that have been stalled or had any type of exercise restriction is not uncommon. This is frequently referred to as ‘stocking up’. Usually if the horse is allowed to exercise or even given access to some turn-out the swelling will resolve. If the swelling persists or if the horses are lame you should have your veteri- narian examine your horses as soon as possible. – Dr. Symm
