conference introductions there is always a hidden surprise and this year was no exception. After officially opening the 2005 conference he duly began to strip off to reveal himself scantly dressed in women’s underwear that included stockings, suspenders and corset. The reason behind this sudden change of clothes was to promote one of the conferences attractions; a night out to see Funny Girls, a cabaret act touring Blackpool. DR DANNY THOROGOOD, Principal Research Scientist at The Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER): Away from work I, along with my wife, Jane, a full-time primary school teacher, bring up his four children who, like us, are keen athletes. Our second daughter, Elinor, is following in my footsteps and has this year represented Wales in cross country running and triathlon. I have represented Wales in both Duathlon (Run-Bike-Run) and Triathlon in Home Internationals competition. Last year I gained a bronze medal in the British Masters Indoor Athletics Championships 1500m in a time of 4:16 and then went on to represent Great Britain in the 40-44 age-group World Triathlon Championships in Madeira, finishing 28th out of 100 of the world’s best triathletes in my age- group. Later that year I won my age-group in the world’s biggest triathlon in London over 3 minutes ahead of the nearest competitor. Endurance sport is a lifestyle choice for the Thorogoods. I am
chairman of our local Triathlon and Cycling Clubs and spend up to 15 hours a week in the summer and 8 hours in the winter on my own swimming, running and biking - even mowing the lawn and doing the jobs around the house are considered as a bit of extra training. But, as a qualified coach, I am also on hand to help and advise newcomers to the sport (no wonder his children are keen on sport – they’d never see him otherwise!) My fitness does come in handy when I’m asked to collect grass samples from high mountain regions, I’m usually the fastest up to the top and down again!
