Initially the autonomic nervous system kicks in via sweat and increased blood pressure. Horses are, by nature, FLIGHT animals, a carryover of their early predatory survival skills.


Te second sign of stress is adaptation (resistance) which ends in gradually depleting your horse’s resources. An ex- ample might be a horse eventually be- coming lame in the front while compro- mising for an older injury to the back.


Exhaustion is the final stage of stress, whereby your horse may be unable to maintain normal function. Your horse may have an increased heart rate and sweat. Long term damage may result if extended time passes with no relief and your horse’s immune system is exhausted. Diseases such as ulcers and other digestive disorders, and depression can manifest in your horse.

We want the horse’s body to be able to acknowledge the stress and then to be able to move the stress out in a way that does not compromise the body.”
