hen someone points out that “stressed” spelled backward is “desserts,” my usual reaction (after I banish the image of a moist chocolate brownie while frantically
attempting to stay on task) is, “huh?”
Is this quasi-consolation suggesting we can reverse stress by enjoying a dessert? If only it were that simple...
Stress comes from so many sources, manifests itself in so many ways, for so many different reasons – a simple solution is, I fear, wishful thinking.
Understanding what various stressors do to our bodies, and our horses’ bodies, is the first step toward alleviating stress and consequently improving our overall health and that of our equine friends. Helping us understand, Shari Frederick introduces us to Biofeedback for Horses (p4), Bryan Farcus explains how hooves are affected by stress (p8), and Madalyn Ward offers hints on preventing and treating ulcers in our horses (p28).
G
uaranteed to take your mind off of whatever’s stressing you right now are Melissa Wright’s insightful profile of paraequestrian Elizabeth Pigott (p12) and Jenny
Lance’s and Angelia Robinette-Dublin’s delightful account of their first encounters with animal communicators (p22).
Expand your horsekeeping savvy with Jessica Bourgeois’ informative discussion about homeopathic nosodes (p16), our own 10 tips for natural fly control (p20), and a summertime reminder on the importance of hydration (p6).
Speaking of
summer....it’s finally bath time! Check out our Bonus Bathing Section (pp26-29) to further enhance this warm-weather ritual.
We extend a huge Tank-You to all of you who have submitted photos for our Cover Photo Contest! Enjoy a few samples here, and look for our winning image on our October/ November edition (maybe it’s one of these?). Tere’s still time to send us your entry, too – deadline is July 31. Get more info at
