loud computing is the trend du jour, and it comes with huge benefits — and equally huge risks.

Recently, Security Matters and Microsoft

Canada hosted a roundtable discussion on the se- curity implications of cloud computing. Moderated by Paul Grossinger, publisher/editor of Security Matters, the session featured a lively discussion about the meaning of cloud computing, and the security concerns and issues surrounding it. Participants came from both the industry

and analyst communities, and included: Fred Carter, senior policy and technology advisor, Information and Privacy Commissioner, On- tario; John Weigelt, national technology of- ficer, Microsoft Canada; Brian O’Higgins, assistant to the chief technology officer, Trend

Micro; Mohammad Akif, national security and privacy lead, Microsoft Canada; and Warren Shiau, senior associate, lead analyst, IT re- search, The Strategic Counsel. The discussion began with the group

musing about the definition of cloud com- puting. For Weigelt, five characteristics define cloud computing: 1. It is service on demand. 2. Location independence: “I don’t worry about where that service is, I just know it’s available to me when I need it.”

3. “I have ubiquitous network access to those resources.”

4. It’s elastic – “I can take as much as I need, when I need it.”

5. “I pay for what I use.” Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8  |  Page 9  |  Page 10  |  Page 11  |  Page 12  |  Page 13  |  Page 14  |  Page 15  |  Page 16  |  Page 17  |  Page 18  |  Page 19  |  Page 20  |  Page 21  |  Page 22  |  Page 23  |  Page 24  |  Page 25  |  Page 26  |  Page 27  |  Page 28  |  Page 29  |  Page 30  |  Page 31  |  Page 32  |  Page 33  |  Page 34  |  Page 35  |  Page 36  |  Page 37  |  Page 38  |  Page 39  |  Page 40  |  Page 41  |  Page 42
