for “tweens,” or a spring musical. Musical styles include New Age, Latin, Jazz, and Gospel. Simple or elaborate choreography may be used, and props found in any church are required. Depending on rehearsal time and space avail- able, one could have a lot of fun with this and go all-out, or make it a concert style with just a few added visuals.
Piano
Recommended by Betty Taylor, organist/pianist and worship committee member at Conde United Methodist Church, Conde, SD.
Here are two publications that I have found to be very useful and listenable for the piano. They are appropriate for any time.
Touched by Jazz: Gospel Favorites for
Piano, by David Paxton, Lorenz Publishing Company 70/1589L, 2007, piano, $12.95. If you would like something different, these jazz harmonies will enrich an informal worship with their melodies. Also, they are a joy to hear. This has a “2” rating for ease in playing. There are ten presentations; included are I Am Thine, O Lord; Oh, How I Love Jesus; There is a Foun- tain; Redeemed; I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go; ’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus; I Hear Thy Welcome Voice; I Must Tell Jesus; The Everlast- ing Arms; Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown? My hope is that you will enjoy present- ing these familiar hymns.
The Church Pianist’s Library, Volume 6,
Lorenz Publishing Company 70/1722L, 2010, piano, $19.95.
This is an addition to the Pianist’s Library that contains settings for hymn tunes and original works that can be used throughout the year. This is a Level 2 book with the publisher suggesting usage of the presentations in the collection. All have the name of the arranger, printed very plainly. Among the collection: All Things Bright and Beautiful, prelude, Roger Summers; Create in Me a Clean Heart, prelude, Todd Beany; I Must Tell Jesus, prelude, offertory, Lani Smith; My Lord, What a Morning!, prelude, Robert W. Thygerson; Ride On!, prelude, offertory, Garrett Parker; To God Be The Glory, prelude, postlude, Lloyd Larson. With this collection, you will be able to find many useful hymn variations to be used during the year.
WORSHIP ARTS • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2010
Handbells
Recommended by Linda Smith, a deacon, who directs six handbell or hand- chime choirs at University United Methodist Church, San Antonio, TX.
Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves Me, arr.
Martha Lynn Thompson, Agape 2362, 2006, 3-5 oct. handbells and opt. handchimes, Level 2, $4.00.
Based on a Swedish folk tune, this delight- ful arrangement also includes William Bradbury’s familiar Jesus Loves Me and is a welcome addition to the repertoire for days celebrating children or the child in each of us. While the full five octaves are used, this can be effectively played by choirs with fewer bells or ringers. The use of chimes is completely op- tional. A “rolling” eighth-note accompaniment and a combination of 3/4 and 4/4 meters present the only real challenges. This is nice for any springtime or summer festival Sunday. Enjoy!
I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry,
arr. Martha Lynn Thompson, Choristers Guild CGB503, 2007, 3-5 oct. handbells w/opt. soloist or narrator and opt. 3-6 oct. handchimes, Level 2, $4.50.
The text of this increasingly-familiar song is clearly for Christian baptism and sharing the words with your congregation in some way is recommended, but the music stands alone as well. The idea that God cares for us throughout life also seems to work on days when celebrat- ing the Christian home or the nurture we receive from parents and others. This fully uses 5 octaves, but will work with 3 or 4. Each stanza is treated differently and a simple ending closes this beautiful addition to worship.
