Taking the green antiques message to the next level
SINCE the last ATGconference in May 2009, the vision that Nigel Worboys outlined is now a reality, with many businesses following his lead.
www.antiquesaregreen.org was
established in September last year, and now has more than 300 businesses and associations as registered members, including the majority of larger organisations within the trade. Many now display the chosen logo and have reciprocal links to the website. Some now include a few lines on their own websites about the campaign. Some have chosen to use the logo on promotional material, stationery and advertising. This is having the desired effect; already the wider media have picked up on the green credentials of antiques. Timeson Mark Hill’s and Kathryn Rayward’s new BBC programme Cracking Antiquesreferred to antiques as “the decorator’s environmental choice”. Kathryn says: “Buying antiques is recycling at its most glamorous. Purchasing second- hand goods means we’re not cutting down trees and damaging the planet.” In a Radio Two interview, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen referred to antiques as the “ultimate in recycling”. Bonhams beef up their board
BONHAMS have made significant changes to their senior management team. Simon Cottle, their director of Continental ceramics and glass, has been appointed to the UK board, taking on extra responsibility for building European business. Previously head of European ceramics and glass at Sotheby’s, he is also the author of several major reference books. He is joined on the board by Robin
Hereford, director for valuations, who joined the company in 2007 and has been concentrating on building their private client base as well as on attracting single- owner collections, corporate and institutional collections. There’s a promotion, too, for Antony Bennett, currently managing director of Chester, who becomes deputy chairman, England and Wales.
Heritage in NY
HERITAGE Auction Galleries will open a new gallery in New York in September. They have leased a ground-floor space, located at 445 Park Avenue, between 56th and 57th Streets. The venue will hold pre-sale exhibitions rather than sales to boost their exposure in New York. The Dallas-based auction company, who reported sales of $600m in 2009, will continue to hold sales at other venues in Manhattan. They have also recently opened a Beverly Hills, California saleroom.
