1. The eccentric Meryl Watts (1910-1992) moved to the Welsh resort village of Portmeirion during the Second World War after being bombed out of London in the Blitz. She became the Portmeirion artist in residence, selling her views of local villages and landscapes to holidaymakers, before moving to Borth-y-Gest in Caernarvonshire.
By coincidence, two collectors of Watts’ work have consigned collections to Rogers Jones Co’s April 24 Welsh Sale in Colwyn Bay. The works range from completed oils to a portfolio, estimated at £300-400, of about 45 sketches, oil paintings, collages and watercolours directly from Watts’s studio. The cache includes landscapes, abstract works, commercial work, life drawings and still lifes. This oil on canvas of poppies in a jug in Watts’ cottage at Borth-y-Gest, measures 2ft 5in x 2ft (74 x 62cm) and is estimated at £250-350. Contact 01492 532176 www.rogersjones.co.uk
2. A substantial collection of 18th century blue and white Caughley porcelain, made in a factory on the banks of the River Severn near Ironbridge, will return to Shropshire to be sold at Halls in Shrewsbury on April 28. The entire ceramics section of the sale will be devoted to the collection of over 100 pieces, which has been consigned by a Worcestershire collector.
“This is one of the most important sales of 18th century Caughley blue and white porcelain since 2002 and will appeal to collectors and dealers alike worldwide,” said Halls’ fine art director Jeremy Lamond.
The collection features several rare pieces, including an inkwell estimated at around £4000, a pair of chestnut baskets at up to £2000 and an eye bath at around £1500. Also scarce is this Caughley blue and white cabbage leaf moulded jug, dedicated to Mr and Mrs Bailey and dated 1790, which is estimated at £2000-3000. Contact 01743 284777 www.hallsestateagents.co.uk
3. HMS Leviathan was a First Class armoured cruiser built by John Brown & Co. Ltd of Clydebank for the Royal Navy in 1901. Although the actual ship was scrapped in 1920, this 1/48th scale dockyard model of her survives and will be offered for sale by Charles Miller Ltd
on April 28 in his sale of Maritime Models, Instruments & Art at 25 Blythe Road in London, W14.
Measuring over 4m in length, the model is estimated at £40,000-60,000 and is being sold by the Rotherham Sea Cadets, who have owned it for the last 50 years, to raise funds for running the cadets. The sale will also include six items of silver from the dining service used aboard the R.Y.S. Terra Nova during the 1910 British Antarctic expedition. Contact 0207 806 5530 www.charlesmillerltd.com
4. Throughout his life, the Scottish artist Alberto Morrocco (1917-1998) was a great admirer of the work of Picasso. In the late 1950s and early 60s, Morrocco painted a series of similar figure paintings, which were clearly heavily influenced by Picasso’s work, and among them was this oil on canvas, titled The Fortune Teller. The 2ft 10in x 22in (86 x 56cm) picture, which is signed and inscribed on a label verso, is thought to have been exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1959 (No.1959) and at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1963 (No.73). It will be included, along with several other works by Morrocco, in Bonhams Edinburgh’s sale of 19th and 20th century pictures and prints on April 22, where it is estimated at
