Apprenticeships
see fall in numbers
THE GOVERNMENT’S strategy of using apprentice- per cent over the last year, while the number of 19
ships to tackle unemployment among the young may to 24 year olds joining apprenticeship schemes also
be encountering difficulties. recorded a fall of 5.9 per cent.
Figures from the Department for Business, Innova- Tom Richmond, the skills adviser at the Chartered
tion and Skills have revealed that the number of 16 to Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said
18 year olds starting apprenticeships declined by 7.5 that the data suggest that the government’s policy of
expanding apprenticeships to tackle youth unemploy-
ment is faltering.
Mr Richmond commented: ‘While we applaud the
government’s broad commitment to supporting
young people in these difficult times, it is clear that
apprenticeships alone are not capable of solving the
problems faced by school, college and university
leavers.
‘The government’s announcement that a subsidy of
£2,500 will be offered to firms for taking on young
apprentices fails to address these concerns, especially
as it will only be given to 5,000 companies.’
