A New Season of Cinema
Ahhhh autumn. It’s always refreshing when fall arrives and brings with it a mix of ….well, let’s be
honest…. better quality films for audiences to enjoy. Autumn is also the time of year when we start
to hear the buzz. oscar buzz that is. one of the first films to receive this honor is Lone Scherfig’s
An Education. Since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival where it won the prestigious audience
award, this coming of age love story has picked up rave reviews, particularly for newcomer Carey
Mulligan whom many are saying could be “the next big thing.” In An Education, Mulligan plays
a teenage girl living in 1960s suburban London, who believes earning an oxford education will
be her ticket to a sophisticated adulthood. But when she becomes involved with an older man,
who introduces her to a glittering new world of classical concerts, fancy restaurants and trendy
nightclubs, she must decide if this new path is one that will trap her or set her free. Also featured
in the film are Academy Award winner emma Thompson, Peter Sarsgaard and dominic Cooper.
opens in theaters october 9.
Other Films Receiving Autumn Accolades
A SeriouS MAn - Brothers Joel and ethan Coen are at the top of their game. Hot on the heels of
No Country for Old Men and Burn After Reading, the directing duo are back with their latest black
comedy which this time is set in 1967 and concerns a Midwestern physics professor whose staid
and stable life slowly begins to unravel after his wife announces that she’s leaving him. Up-and-
coming actor Michael Stuhlbarg stars in the lead role of the film—a film which takes the Coen clan
back to their roots in Minnesota, where they haven’t shot in since 1996’s mega hit Fargo. opens in
theaters october 2.
CApitAliSM: A love Story - when it comes to Michael Moore, there is no in-between, you
either love him or you hate him. In his latest documentary, Moore travels around the country
asking one question: what is the price America pays for its love of capitalism? Coming in at a time
when the economy is in shambles and unemployment is at record highs, expect another solid,
sure-to-be-controversial piece from the oscar-winning filmmaker. opens in theaters october 2.
AMeliA – Could this be the hat-trick for Hilary Swank? every five years she emerges with a Best
Actress oscar. First in 1999 for Boys Don’t Cry, then again in 2004 with Million Dollar Baby. And
now in 2009, it seems she just may be well set to do it again in the biopic Amelia. The film traces
the life of famed aviator Amelia earhart, who made history in 1932 by becoming the first woman
ever to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean. Five years later, as earhart attempted to fly around the
world, the pilot and her plane simply vanished after crashing into the Pacific ocean. richard Gere,
Virginia Madsen and ewan McGregor co-star in the Avalon Pictures production. opens in theaters
october 23.
60 Second Movie Review by bill biss
Whip it Very Good Now
exuberant and hilarious, drew Barrymore in her first directorial effort
has crafted a thoroughly entertaining comedy/coming-of-age story
called Whip it. Leading actress ellen Page portrays a high school girl
named Bliss who leads an unfulfilled life in Bodine, TX. on a shopping
trip to Austin, she picks up a flyer for a roller derby competition and
the rest would be a spoiler alert…trust me, what ensues is a comedy
of empowerment wrapped around family expectations and learning
to, as the film tagline says, “Be your own hero.” The ensemble cast
including Juliet Lewis, drew Barrymore, Marsha Gay Harden and
Kristin wiig is all perfectly blended along with a great screenplay by
Shauna Cross who wrote the original novel called Derby Girl. Whip it
into a theatre now for a first class ride around the rink.
