eating out by bill biss
Situated adjacent to the lobby of the Marriott Downtown Hotel, Soleil
@K, offers an enticing and satisfying spin on modern California cuisine. The
restaurant’s décor is warm and inviting with sun-drenched hues of yellow. The
communal tables and comfortable booths offer the patron a shared dining ex-
perience that harkens back to a family mealtime around the dinner table. The

summer nights.
DINING
Executive Chef Eddie Fincher’s menu presents an amazing array of fine meats,
poultry and seafood with plenty of starters that can be enjoyed between you
ExPERIENCE AT
and your dining companion. Soleil also has an impressive wine list as well.
Fincher’s skills in the kitchen not only attract hotel guests but the locals who
live near the hotel and Petco Park. His talent was easily discernable from the
very first appetizer to the last bite of dessert. Let’s get seated… shall we?
Our server Harper sat us in a comfortable booth and we surely enjoyed her
personable and precise attention. As there was a game going on at Petco Park Soleil @K
that night, all the wait staff showed their San Diego pride by wearing Padres
jerseys… more on game nights at Soleil @K a bit later. For starters, we ordered SOLEIL @ K
Poached Jumbo Prawns and Tempura Lobster. Meals are definitely meant to 660 K Street
be shared at Soleil. The prawns come with a delicate leaf arrangement made of San Diego, CA 92101
avocados and a perfect blend of Cajun cocktail sauce while the lobster is pre- 619.450.2437
sented on a wild mushroom risotto cake that is placed in a light pool of truffle
butter. Both were superb creations.
Even though there were four different enticing fish dishes on the entrée
menu along with inviting descriptions of veal, duck, chicken and lamb din-
ners…sometimes it’s a real treat just to have a steak. That’s exactly what I had
that night—I ordered the Star Ranch Grass Fed Rib Eye. When the plate was
presented it was picture-perfect and cooked exactly as ordered. A unique
touch of frizzled leeks was sprinkled on top while the steak was marinated in a
wine sauce to enhance each bite. A combination of fresh vegetables along with
au gratin potatoes made for a rewarding and fulfilling meal. I’m starting to get
hungry again just thinking about it.
Now, my dining companion went straight for the Dijon Crusted Rack of
Lamb. Once again the presentation of this dish was outstanding. I know some
people are fast eaters, but I swear it was only a matter of ten minutes before
his plate was almost empty. How was it? His response, “Excellent…really good.
Real good!” Thank you Chef Fincher! For lamb lovers, this meal comes also with
roasted garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a balsamic-port sun-
dried cherry sauce.
Another intriguing menu offer that must be mentioned is their three-course
special for $35. You begin with a baby spinach salad with oranges, candied
pecans and sherry tomato vinaigrette. This is followed by a second course with
a Kurobuta Pork Chop in herb cream and porcini oil accompanied by mashed
potatos and seasonal vegetables. Finally for dessert, a rich and devilishly good
Chocolate Tart topped with Jack Daniels whipped cream. This is truly a delight-
ful dinner for one.
Now, let me tell you about game nights at Soleil @K. When the Padres play at
Petco Park, Executive Chef Eddie Fincher offers a special half-price menu from
4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The food selections presented are a heck of a lot more
enticing than stadium fare… believe me. So, the next time, you and your bud-
dies are heading to a baseball game at Petco, make it a point to stop in Soleil @K
first. With cheese steak sandwiches, certified Angus Beef burgers or artesian
flatbread pizzas and other delicious entrées such as their honey-glazed chicken
wings, it’s the perfect destination before game time.
Well, there you have it. Excellent food at a smooth price, a beautiful setting
and top-notch service at Soleil @K. They truly offer a stellar dining experience.
