when it came to Teddington, he didn’t know his ITV from
his NPL.
Contrary to Rudyard’s rumours, ‘Teddington’ derives not from
‘Tide’s End Town’, but from the name of an Old English tribal
chief. Apparently the suffix ‘ton’ translates as ‘settlement’.
Assuming, therefore, that the ‘ing’ is a mere link between the
other two syllables, that presumably means that this big cheese of
the Saxon scene was a geezer by the name of Tedd.
Strange days. Fortunately things have evolved since then, and
Teddington has steadily acquired an unimpeachable pedigree of
its own. It may not quite have the heritage of Twickenham or
Hampton Court next door, but start enumerating its distinctive
contributions to history, and one cannot help but be impressed by
its formidable CV.
Noel Coward was born here; RD Blackmore, author of the
classic Victorian novel Lorna Doone, lived and died here; the
eponymous identifier of Down’s Syndrome plied his trade here at
one of the most pioneering hospitals in the land. Teddington Lock
is the longest lock on the river, marking the upper limits of the
tidal Thames, while Teddington Studios played host to Thames
Television in its pomp. And then there’s Bushy Park – home to
kings, prime ministers and the World War II high command –
where modern hockey was born and the D-Day landings
planned. Here too, at the National Physical Laboratory within the
