Heathrow ‘fast forward’ runway call

We say… “The government’s approval for a third runway at

Heathrow is welcome news, but it needs to fast forward the final decision and construction of the project.

“We cannot have a never-ending holding pattern of inaction, which postpones the economic boost and jobs a third runway would bring to the UK economy at a time when we should be demonstrating that Britain is open for business. Heathrow workers with tens of thousands of workers stand ready to build and deliver the new runway and trust that government ministers will put the national interest ahead of internal Tory politics.”

Peter Kavanagh, Unite London and Eastern regional secretary, October 25

They say… Foreign secretary Boris Johnson MP, famously “vowed” to

lie down “in front of the bulldozers” now doubts whether construction would ever start. He said, “The day when the bulldozers appear is a long way off, if indeed they ever materialise.”

“[The government] has chosen the option with the least chance of being delivered. The sheer complexity, cost and legal difficulties mean it is unlikely ever to happen. It will be a millstone round this government’s neck for years.”

Heathrow’s third runway has now been approved but Unite – representing over 34,000 workers at the airport – has urged the government not to delay on the final word and construction plans.

Others say… “The Heathrow expansion is absolutely vital for Britain. It will

help our economy grow faster and stronger. This investment has the potential to create thousands of high-quality jobs and apprenticeships right across the UK. The government must ensure that Heathrow expansion is put in the fast lane.”

Frances O’Grady, TUC general secretary, October 25

…and Theresa May? “I am clear that we must say no to a third runway at

Heathrow.” Ms May’s website, January 2009, deleted in 2013 when she became home secretary

“Like many local residents I strongly welcome the cancellation of the third runway at Heathrow.”

“After decades of delay we are showing that we will take the big decisions when they’re the right decisions for Britain, and we will ensure they’re right for ordinary working people too.”
