OICE FOR VOTERS? “

FOR OR AGAINST

FOR PR Eddie Cassidy, Unite EC member, Glasgow

“PR as I’ve experienced it does give a more complete view of the electorate – as a voter, you’ll know that your views will at least be partly represented instead of not at all.”

AGAINST

Kathy Smith, Unite branch secretary, Bromley

“I’ve been brought up with an absolute fear of the extreme right gaining seats. You look at places like France and Spain, and I’ve always thought that because of our system here in the UK we’ve been able to keep the extreme right out.”

UNSURE

Sohayalla Wilson, Unite shop steward, Manchester

“It’s very hard to say we should get rid of FPTP because we are so used to it. PR might weaken the actual direct link you have with your MP, but it might actually bring greater overall voter engagement.”

PR or FPTP? Unite does not have a formal

policy on PR. This year’s Unite policy conference decided to revisit the issue at the conference in 2018. uniteWORKS is opening up the debate and in the next edition we’ll be discussing FPTP. If you’d like to comment on FPTP why not send us a line or email uniteworks@unitetheunion.org?

In the EU referendum there was a massive, unprecedented turnout because people knew their vote would count. It’s absolutely essential for democracy that people start to feel their vote counts
