Unilever, Hubbub and WRAP launch anti-food waste plan

Unilever is working with its charitable partner Hubbub and industry partners to lead a UK wide movement helping people to value food and reduce food waste. The official publication, ‘A Joint Ambition for a Zero Food Waste

Britain’, outlines five key focus areas that the initiative believes will tackle the issue of food waste and encourage more sustainable lifestyles. It has been created in consultation with 240 businesses and considers the views of the UK public through polling a sample of more than 2,000 householders. “We see our Joint Ambition as a catalyst to addressing the issue of

food waste. To turn our Joint Ambition into reality we will strive to: 1. Identify further evidence of the benefits to the UK economy in tackling food waste

2. Secure further support from a diverse range of organisations and people.

3. Support a range of initiatives which will help households in reducing their food waste.

4. Engage with government, exploring the role they can play to support implementation.”

“The UK produces 10 million tonnes of food waste annually, of

which 7 million tonnes comes from households. Solutions must range from helping households reduce the 4.2 million tonnes of avoidable waste, through to creating a more coherent national infrastructure to handle the 1.6 million tonnes of unavoidable food waste created each year.”

Lender approval for Pelican Rouge

strategic plan Pan-European coffee and vending business Pelican Rouge has confirmed formal lender approval for its new strategic plan to reposition the business for long-term growth. The details of the plan include the immediate separation of the

coffee and vending businesses and the appointment of a new non- executive director with relevant coffee industry experience to the supervisory board. Management believes that the new strategic plan places the

business on a strong platform, from which organised disposals can be initiated. To facilitate the first phase of strategy, Deutsche Bank has been engaged to advise on strategic alternatives for the disposal of the coffee business with marketing expected to commence within the next six months. Alain Beyens, CEO of Pelican Rouge, said: “On behalf of the

management team, I express thanks to our lenders for their ongoing support, which will enable us to deliver maximum value for the company. The strategic plan which has been approved aims to capitalise on the opportunities for growth while recognising and addressing the challenges in the market. “We continue to believe in the positive outlook for the European

coffee industry, and this part of the business is well positioned to build on the growth it has seen in its core European markets. Further, we will seek to maintain our leading market position in core vending markets in Spain, France and the UK, enabling future local consolidation to ensure sustainable profitable growth in those markets.”

Five go mad in Malaga

Five of vending’s finest have signed up to tackle a 300 mile charity cycle ride from Malaga to Vilamoura. Director of vending at popular packaging specialist 4 Aces Richard Allen is joining Crane Merchandising System’s Roger Bunn, N&W’s David Brady and Andy Cunliffe and Ian Keefe of Benders to raise funds for Diamond Blackfan Anaemia charity (DBA UK). The team will be riding with a support vehicle manned by Tony Abbott and Fred Stanley from The Coffee Bean Company. Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) is a rare bone marrow failure

disorder, usually diagnosed before 12 months of age; sufferers can often require a lifetime of treatment and, in some cases, a bone marrow transplant. The group is hoping to raise awareness, as well as some much-needed funds, by undertaking the ride in the charity’s name. Richard commented: “Although this is my first venture with the group, I’m aware that these vending brave hearts previously rode from

London to Paris raising £15,000 for MacMillan and EdUkaid in the process, so we have a lot to live up to when we climb on our bikes this September.” The journey involves approximately 17,000 ft of climbing – no mean feat for the cyclists who start the ride on the 20 September when

the weather is expected to still be pretty hot. Riding via Seville, the party is scheduled to cross into Portugal and arrive in Vilamoura on 22 September, in time for all those attending the AVS conference to give them “Le Grande Arrive”. The trip is being funded solely by the riders and so they are reaching out to the AVS community to show massive support and help us

raise as much as possible for this deserving Charity that touches one of your own members. If you’d like to make a donation please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Richard-Allen22 - or be prepared to tip out your pockets over the conference weekend.
