Crucible Interpretations

Year 10 Drama students gave a final performance of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ in the amphitheatre to a mixed audience of students, parents and staff. The 65 Drama students each had to take scenes from the play and perform in groups of 5 or 6. When asked what she thought of ‘The Crucible’ itself as a script for each year’s performance, Mrs Sloane, Subject Leader for Drama said, “I hate and love the play at the same time. The play is one of the most challenging in modern theatre and a real stretch for the students.” Personally, despite there being repeated scenes throughout the 12 groups, it was a wonderful experience. It was never dull throughout the whole range of interpretations on offer.

The play itself is about the Salem Witch trials shadowing the McCarthy era ‘Communistscare’. Arthur Miller himself was a staunch Communist and the whole

play is an exploration of the finger pointing of brother to brother within 1950s America. Given that the performers only had three weeks to prepare, not a line was missed, not a nuance left unheard.

All in all a fantastic set of excerpts from a very challenging and intricate play. At JFS, ‘school productions are never just school productions’, a mantra well known to anyone who has ever attended a production under Mrs Sloane. When talking to the students, a love of the play and the subject itself studied at JFS was more than obvious. The task of living up to the six years of previous Crucible performances was daunting, but the current Year 10 cohort stood up to all expectations and beyond.

It was truly a wonderful evening.
