Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Visits JFS
We were privileged to have Rabbi David Lau, Chief Rabbi of Israel, visit us last week as part of a short visit to London.
He dropped in to a Year 8 Jewish Studies lesson and later addressed students in Years 8 and 10. He spoke about ‘being a light unto the nations’ and related the theme of the Menorah in the Parsha of Behaalotecha.
The visit concluded with an interesting ‘Question and Answer’ session with the students.
Lambeth Palace
Iftar Event This week I had the honour to attend the Naz Legacy Foundation’s Interfaith Iftar event, representing JFS students, alongside the Head Girl, Rosie Serlin, Mr Rinkoff and Mr Peston.
The event,
Palace, gave guests of all faiths the opportunity to meet and discuss ideas surrounding cohesion, collaboration, and community in the shadow of the evening’s Iftar (the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan).
After hearing empowering speeches from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis and the new Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, guests came together to discuss the best ways to bring faith and non-faith communities together in London.
As Iftar unfolded and guests broke hosted at Lambeth
the Ramadan fast with Muslim attendees, I discussed my Jewish principles, beliefs, and customs with members of other communities. It was through exploring the differences in our identities I learned the most about my own and the
importance of dialogue. In an age which is increasingly defining itself through division, it has never been more important to build bridges.
