treated nanoclay (made with a patented technology), which is dispersed throughout the polymer and is said not to migrate. The size of the platelets and the type of treatment, which is tailored to the system, allows good dispersion, explains Richard Marshall, CEO of TenasiTech. The additive is claimed to reduce scratching by

years ago by Nyco is Nylite, a blend of wollastonite and a synthetic fi bre, which increases stiffness and so allows users to reduce fi ller level while maintaining stiffness.

The nano option TenasiTech, which operates globally, from its facilities in the US and Australia, recently launched its SOLID-TT additive that improves SMR of polar polymers such as acrylic (PMMA), PA, TPUs, and PC. The additive is a

reinforcing the bulk polymer and strengthening the surface (it works well with unfi lled polymers). Marshall says that the additive is an alternative to hard-coating, which is an expensive, secondary, UV-cured siloxane coating. “There is a growing market for glossy parts where hard-coating is too expensive—inside of an automobile, for example, or for cell phone backs,” notes Marshall. In external tests, PMMA with SOLID-TT has been shown to fi rst scratch at 7H pencil hardness, compared to 3-4H for the same resin without the additive. The company recently completed its fi rst trial in PC

and found the resin’s scratch resistance increased from 2B to H with 1% of the additive. It is now in discussions with customers to trial PC in commercial applications, according to Marshall. Additives that bloom to the surface, such as

erucamide and oleamide, have long been used effec-
