ON THE COVER Eastern promise

23 Leader: Tim Gillett Asian promise

The world of scholarly publishing has been experiencing a period of intense change, with the issues of visibility, access and discovery

becoming hugely important in recent years. But change has perhaps been most profound in terms of changing global markets – a point illustrated in the Focus on Asia supplement that occupies the middle eight pages of this issue of Research Information. While there are huge differences between distinct Asian countries, there are similarities for researchers as well – and our supplement links common ground in countries as diverse as China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nepal. The various contributions make it very clear that there is huge potential for publishers in this region, as well as for researchers working within Asia.

Please get in touch if you would like to be involved in future supplements covering Latin America and the Middle East. We also tackle three further key issues: on page 36 Sharon Davies looks into the rising adoption of cloud-based systems in research libraries, while on page 40 Rebecca Pool investigates education establishments’ efforts to meet stringent open access mandates. On page 44 David Stuart looks at some of the latest innovations pervading the fast-changing information ecosystem.

Recent developments will be to the fore at this season’s industry events, and Research Information will be present at Frankfurt Book Fair (Hall 4.2, stand K68), Internet Librarian International at London’s Olympia, and at the Charleston Conference, USA.

I look forward to meeting some of you there! @researchinfo
