Fourth industrial revolution

T

he factories of the future are set to be much more interconnected. Te vision of Industry 4.0, a German concept referring to the fourth industrial revolution,

is of automated equipment supplying data to the rest of the factory about the status of the production process. Siemens has developed an electronics production facility in Amberg, Germany that’s an early precursor of Industry 4.0. Machine vision data will feed into these smart factories,

for product inspection among other functions. Te article on page 4 discusses developments taking place in the field of Industry 4.0 and how machine vision will be used. One significant piece of news for the machine vision

world in 2015 – and one which could have repercussions for camera makers in the future – is Sony’s announcement that it will cease production of CCDs. CMOS image sensors have already gained ground over their CCD counterparts, but with the main supplier of CCDs to the vision industry stopping production, does this herald the demise of the CCD for all but the most specialised applications? Jessica Rowbury on page 22 looks at the image sensor market and what Sony’s news means for the machine vision industry. Tis issue of the Vision Yearbook also has viewpoints

from industry experts on page 12 covering topics as diverse as embedded vision, 3D imaging, automotive production, traffic monitoring, and robot vision. Tere are also articles on emerging geographical markets and vision standards. With Industry 4.0 accelerating, along with vision

suppliers finding ever more application areas for imaging, the machine vision industry remains in a strong position for the coming years.
