Contents Dear Reader,
Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today, and welcome back to school! I hope you had a refreshing break and, with batteries suitably recharged, you’re now ready to throw yourselves into the hurly burly of a new school year although, if you’re lacking that little bit of inspiration, why not read regular Education Today columnist Kirsty Bertenshaw’s piece on page 12 about getting the new year off to the best possible start? Also in this issue, I’m delighted to bring you an extended version of our ever popular View from the classroom feature. This month, we hear from Rebecca Thomas at Cherry Orchard Primary in Worcester, discussing the school’s implementation of the “Learning without Limits programme, and looking in detail at how the use of innovative teaching practices and some great pedagogy has changed the school and staff. There are some great ideas in the piece and I hope you’ll find something useful to take away. In our main feature, we take a look at the science curriculum for key stages 1 and 2, and show how science in primary school can be fun – honestly! We also have all the regular contributors you’d expect, with Graham Cooper from Capita SIMS talking about tracking behaviour in schools, and Alicia Blanco-Bayo giving us her usual thoughtful views on early years. There are also a host of commentators offering their thoughts on current topics in UK education. And remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you!
Enjoy the issue! Jonathan Swift – Managing Editor In this issue...
