dividual scenes along its lower half celebrate various aspects of Slaton’s history, including its Harvey House. But it is the train sweeping the length of the building on the upper half that literally ties the story together. You can see the mural on the web at www.texases-
capes.com/TexasArt/Slaton-Heritage-Mural. htm, where you will also find information on how to order a print from the Slaton Chamber of Commerce. For more information on the book, in-

“I made two important decisions today,” Di- ary of a Waitress (Calkins Creek/Highlights, 2015) opens. “One, to apply for a position as a waitress, and two, to begin my career as a journalist.” The sentence was penned by a fic- titious 17-year old, Katherine (Kitty) Evans, on June 1, 1926. Kitty goes on to report, also on page 1, that an economic setback for her father’s business has resulted in him telling her she will not be able to attend college that fall as she’d anticipated. A couple of pages lat- er she reports browsing the hometown Leav- enworth, Kan., newspaper after shedding an unspecified volume of tears, and seeing the classic Fred Harvey ad that opens, “Want- ed: Young women 18 to 30 years of age . . .” Whether out of pique or from impulse, she responds and is hired. What follows is her account of the first six months of her career. The book’s subtitle, “The Not-So-Glamorous Life of a Harvey Girl,” promises an accurate portrayal of her experience.
