S.T.A.R.S. FEATURED AT ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT AND HIGH PERFORMANCE SUMMER CAMPS

U.S. Figure Skating’s Athlete High

Performance and Athlete Development Departments kicked off the 2015–16 season in June with Pairs Camp in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Dance Camp in Laurel, Maryland; and Singles Camp in Colora- do Springs, Colorado. At each of the three camps, participants had the opportunity to complete the off -ice S.T.A.R.S. testing to evaluate their agility, balance, coordina- tion, strength, power and fl exibility. Each camp featured participation from 2015–16 International Selection Pool (ISP) athletes. S.T.A.R.S. is open to all U.S. Fig-

ure Skating members who are at least 6 years old and have passed the pre-prelim- inary moves-in-the-fi eld test. Although S.T.A.R.S. was designed as a grassroots program to promote overall fi tness in de- velopmental athletes and train young ath- letes ahead of the on-ice skills curve, ISP athletes have also identifi ed S.T.A.R.S. as a way to gauge their athletic abilities and modify their training plans according to strengths and weaknesses identifi ed in the program. Senior Director of Athlete High Per-

formance Mitch Moyer has encouraged ISP athletes to participate in S.T.A.R.S. in

the interest of tracking their progress and to promote strong, healthy bodies that are injury resistant, given the volume of on-ice training elite athletes typically endure. Bringing together the ISP athletes to test together proved to be a great way for them to enjoy S.T.A.R.S. more, cheer each other on and, of course, bring out the best in their competitive natures. “Participating in S.T.A.R.S. for the

fi rst time this year was a fun experience,” Daniel O’Shea, 2015 U.S. pairs bronze medalist with partner Tarah Kayne, said. “We do about an hour of off -ice training daily at our rink, because we believe that being well-rounded athletes is important for avoiding injuries and to improve on the ice. It was nice to have S.T.A.R.S. to put a value or number on all the hard work we put in.” “My favorite part of the S.T.A.R.S. testing was being able to participate at the Olympic Training Center (where the Sin- gles Camp combine was held),” 2015 U.S. junior champion Bradie Tennell said. “I’m anxious to see how I have improved since the last time I did STARS. “
