Tyler Hicks beats 200-pound sturgeon despite rocks and rapids STURGEON GENERAL
Oregon angler Tyler Hicks stunned the world when video of his eight-foot white sturgeon hit social media. Kayak Angler caught up with Tyler for the story behind this unbelievable fish story. The towering walls of the Columbia River Gorge surrounded me while I sat on anchor bobbing in the cur-
rent. Fifty feet below me on the end of my line was a chunk of shad. A half hour passed before the first large arches of white sturgeon appeared on the fish finder. I felt the
familiar tap on my line and a second later the rod tip buried. I immediately dropped off anchor while line screamed off the reel. The fish pulled me upriver into my anchor rope! Line continued peeling from the reel as I shouted for help from my kayak fishing buddy, David Brinn. With David’s help I was able to free the fish from the anchor line. I gave chase as the fish had nearly
spooled all the line from the reel. Further out and downriver I got my first peek at the massive sturgeon. I was surprised by how quickly the fish came to surface. It was as if the beast wanted to know who its adversary was. After getting a glimpse of me, the fish disappeared back to the bottom. After 15 minutes I worked the fish out of the main channel into softer current. It took another 15 minutes
to get the fish into the shallows and ashore. David held the tail while I stood exhausted marveling at the mas- sive size of the fish, whose head was easily as large as my torso. After a kiss on the gill plate we pointed the fish home and watched a living dinosaur disappear back into the depths.
