to financially reward the ethical and honest behaviors of companies, their employees, their concern for our environment and so on. If enough Christians invested their assets in this way, there could be a profound positive impact on the country and the world. William C. Mittak Lyons, N.Y.

More politics The social responsibility article and accompanying study guide could be controversial because of politics. It is the gospel and not politics that drives me to try to be socially responsible. Roger Amundson Clermont, Iowa

Keep it together Bravo to Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton’s column “Worship is the heart of all we do” (May, page 50). Her statement, “There is a certain humility and beautiful communion in not trying to reinvent the service each time we join with our brothers and sisters throughout the world and across the centuries” speaks to the very heart of the matter. Unlike other denominations where one is a mere spectator, Lutheran worship involves all of the many senses. Madeleine Koeppen Idaho Falls, Idaho

Open to change We all pick and choose what needs rewriting. Some (me too) are glad we changed our long held belief about women not being allowed to serve as clergy. Like the Nicene Creed it, too, was long in the making but not part of the canon and needed revision. Why can’t we have the same open- ness to rethinking some of the teach- ings in the creeds? As Martin Luther said, “Everything we teach needs to be open for examination and possible revision.” The Rev. George S. Johnson Laguna Woods, Calif.

Naming, baptizing & affirming It was an emotional day at Trinity Lutheran of Manhattan, N.Y.,May 10 when Danielle Rye and Victoria McDonnell, both transgendered members of the church, experienced bap- tism (Rye, at font) and affi rmation of baptism (McDonnell, previously baptized as a boy). Heidi Neumark, pastor of Trinity, who anointed and presented a candle to McDonnell, said, “I loved the part where I got to say, ‘Victoria, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. As Jesus said to the disciples, I now say to you, ‘Rejoice that your name is written in heaven.’ ”
