Victoria Anthony

Fifth in the World in 2013, the California native has her sights set on capturing World and Olympic gold

By Alexandra Pernice Growing up, Victoria Anthony didn’t really think becom- ing a wrestler was for her.

In fact, she thought it was a terrible idea. She had been a judo athlete since age 6, but at the age of 14 an injury forced her to choose between ending her judo career or picking up a similar sport – wrestling. “My parents suggested I try wrestling, since I would be entering high school in the coming semester and my high school had a wrestling team,” said Anthony, a 2013 World Team member. “I thought this was an awful idea. I didn't want to wrestle boys or wear a singlet, which at the time I thought was a leotard. Honestly, the idea seemed like social suicide.

It wasn’t too long before she was convinced, however. The sport she once saw as an awful option suddenly pre- sented itself as a grand opportunity. After seeing a demon- stration I decided wrestling did look a lot like judo. I also realized it would get me out of P.E. class, so it sounded good to me.”
