This is not an easy task. The trend in the U.S. has moved more toward folkstyle wrestling. This means less and less coaches are teaching the classical style of wrestling. Coaches in the U.S. are pushing their athletes toward the American-only style of wrestling. I am not sure why this is the case? Why didn’t we see this trend coming?
Greco is still the most popular form of wrestling worldwide, but in the U.S. less than three percent wrestle Greco-Roman. The pool of potential Greco athletes in the U.S. is small. There are still small pockets in the U.S. where coaches teach Greco and athletes wrestle Greco, but seems like it’s less and less every year. USA Wrestling supports all age levels of Greco-Roman wrestling - Kids, Schoolboys, Cadets, Juniors and University. I estimate that another 10 percent of coaches and athletes actively dabble with Greco and support our Greco program. Every year, USA Wrestling holds the U.S. Cadet and Junior Nationals tournament in Fargo, where more than 2,000 athletes compete in Greco and freestyle wrestling.
