From his ongoing sketchbook and portable watercolors, to the flurry of an inky black pen scratching out deliberate lines with the expertise of a trained cartoonist, Flohr is always creating art. The pen, the pencil, or the brush move back and forth across the substrate, each movement dictated by his observations. It appears immediate and effortless, much thanks to the many years invested in his craft. What very few people tend to see are the hours behind closed doors working in his studio. In many ways, the life of an artist is a solitary one. Every painting presents the essence of its subject — bereft of any unnecessary flourishes. One would almost
imagine that these compositions materialize in the instant that Flohr conceives them, yet it takes willful execution and dedication to make the compositions tell his story.
Many things have changed for Michael Flohr over
the years, but as one of the most prolific artists of our time, there is much more to be seen from this young artist. At the age of 40, he has been lucky to make a living doing what he loves, but it is hard work and inspiration more than luck that has taken him this far. You will have the opportunity to meet Michael Flohr at Exclusive Collections Gallery June 12-15, 2015 at San Diego’s Seaport Village.
