REVIEW 005 THE YEAR OF BIG NUMBERS
SAMANTHA McCLARY
It was the year of big numbers at MIPIM 2015, with significant investment and development projects announced and a notable increase in delegates from North America and Turkey. Conference organiser Reed MIDEM said that 93 countries were represented at the event this year, with more than 4,500 investors among the 22,000 delegates that descended on Cannes last week. Attendance by US businesses was up by
15.3% to 219 companies this year, with Cana- dian attendance up by 80% to 72 companies. The boom in interest from North America coin- cided with the inclusion, for the first time, of US and Canadian pavilions on the main MIPIM exhibition floor. Filippo Rean, director of Reed MIDEM’s real
estate division, said: “This year we have been encouraged by the growth in size of the US delegation. Given the importance of the US domestic real estate market, the state of the country’s economy and the size of the US investment funds, there is huge potential to grow the American presence at MIPIM in the future and we intend to ensure than the importance of the United States’ real estate
industry is reflected at MIPIM.” Businesses from Turkey were also one of the big growth stories at MIPIM this year, with a 32% increase in companies in attendance to 228. The country had a lot to show off, most
notably its 96 sq m interactive Istanbul model, which dwarfed London’s new 42.6 sq m model, and showcased 40 development projects requiring investment of some €28bn (£20bn). Other Turkish cities in attendance included
Antalya, which was seeking investors to sup- port its Konyaalti Coast and Kepezalti central urban renewal projects, and Balikesir, which made its debut at MIPIM keen to establish a logistics and tourism industry.
