Letter of The Month

“Imagine this situation: I am the only kid in my entire college who kayaks. Nobody understands my love for the river, and me wearing my World Class Academy, FutaFest or Little White Race shirts is completely lost on them. My friends and room- mate’s friends only register confusion when they see my PFD stuffed under my bed or my paddle leaning against the wall. I am asking for help, for a public service announcement,

about the amazingness of the sport of whitewater kayaking. Specifically, I need posters. If you have any posters of loops, airscrews, waterfall hucks or anything else that is equally epic, I would really appreciate them. If you feel the need to charge me a modest price, I would understand, although bear in mind, I am a broke college kid, and isn’t the thought that you are broadening the perspectives of preppy New England college kids reward enough?”

Ed’s note: We don’t make posters, but for his love of kayaking and earnest plea—our favorite letter this month—we’re giving Kai a free subscription to Rapid magazine.

Matchy Matchy

Rapid founder and pub- lisher Scott MacGregor maintains he did not in- tentionally order match- ing neon lime gear for the trip in “Guide Training,” (page 32). We’re field- testing the flashy green items—a 143 D raft from AIRE and Anarchy helmet from NRS—for reviews in our Early Summer issue. First impression: A+ for visibility.

#ThrowbackThursday

When we posted “Geek Beak,” (www. rapidmedia.com/0330), nostalgic readers chimed in with their love for Salamander’s old school and impressively enduring brim design. “I have one, got it when they first came out,” wrote Roy Martin on Facebook. (Ed’s note: early ‘90s). “Still have it on my Prijon helmet.” Functional? Yes. Fashion- able? Well, we did find one thing worse than rocking the floppy visor: “Mine ripped off when I took a swim, but I still have the Velcro on my helmet,” Ryan Hiniker commented.
