Browns Canyon - Monumental Effort from
Colorado Paddlers We’d like to thank those ACA members who have been part of the effort to have Browns Canyon protected as a National Monument. At a historic December 6th meeting in Salida, Colorado, hundreds of local residents, including ACA instructors and members, came out to show their passion for the natural beauty of Browns Canyon and their desire to see it protected and preserved. Through our partnership with other members of the Outdoor Alliance, the ACA has been working on behalf of the paddlers of Colorado to encourage our elected officials to make Browns Canyon our next National Monument. If there is any way that the ACA can help you
protect and preserve the waters you love to paddle, please reach out to let us know through your State Director. State reps can be found on the ACA website under the State Director Program tab.
From the State Directors:
West Virginia Despite the cold winter weather, West Virginia ACA members Michelle and Jayson Huston make it out on the river to clean up trash almost every weekend, year-round. Recently, the couple tackled the upper Potomac River near Taylor’s Landing. “Some of the last accessible water on the upper Potomac (Taylor’s Landing) turned out to be an area that’s going to take a lot more clean- up effort to make a dent in. With our fish and safety gear, we ran out of room in the boat hauling this load back up, sadly.” Even with the limited space, the Huston’s were able to bring in quite
a large load using their ACA Paddle Green Bags. “(We were) really impressed with the bags, though; each load weighed a good 60 to 70 pounds and took both of us to lift. Neither one even popped a stitch!”
