The tournament leaders focused efforts on perch and pike. Lessard,

with a solid lead, scored one of each and defended his title. While the favorites solidified their titles, newcomers like 24-year-old Kyle Moxon of Ontario were pleased to find themselves in the top 10. “I’m at a loss for words,” he said after securing a silver medal, “this is the biggest stage I’ve been on.” In between fishing sessions we took time to explore. I was leaving a lo-

cal tackle shop when I noticed a small creek and, looking closer, saw a big pike hovering in the shallow water. I raced back to the car, grabbed a rod and ended up catching the fish, which was bigger than anything I man- aged during the tournament. At the award dinner that evening, I talked fishing with new and old

friends and cheered as each winner was announced. When my name was called for the sportsmanship award I was blown away. It was an honor that my colleagues had voted me a good sport, and I also won automatic entry into next year’s Hobie Fishing World Championships. And that's the high- est honor for any Hobie angler.
