Warming up with JR
This issue, in “5Ws with James Roberts” (page 28), the international winner of the 2014 Green- land National Kayak Championships makes a case for traveling 2,500 miles and dunking your head in the Arctic Ocean, even if you don’t know the difference between a tuilik and a tulip. After competing in Greenland’s icy waters, Roberts didn’t hesitate when we asked the Ontario Sea Kayak Centre co-founder and his partner, Dympna Hayes, to demonstrate the scramble self rescue, sculling brace, and re-enter and roll for our new skills video web series. Take after take, he splashed into the frigid late-fall currents of the Seguin River. Roberts’ loyal Portuguese water dog, Molly, was on hand afterward to warm the star up for 5Ws photographer and Adventure Kayak editor Virginia Marshall. Watch the videos at

“For a moment, gravity and momentum win; water swarms over her face. Then the buoyancy of her body and the careful pressure she exerts inside the kayak bring her back to the surface, where she rests, smiling peacefully.” —From “Frozen Assets” (page 26)
Rages to Riches
To illustrate the untapped economic power of kayakers to effect positive environmental change, our Summer 2014 issue’s Rock the Boat column included the word “dirtbag” under the headline: “You’re Richer than You Think.” Here’s how you responded.
47% Paddlers who insist they’re
richer than we think: “A ridiculous cross section of the paddling public is wealthy.”
22%Paddlers who confused wealth with
decency: “We bathe, are polite, pay our bills and tip well.”
FACEBOOK COMMENT OF THE MONTH:

Everything Old is New Again
29% Paddlers
who’d prefer we avoid name-
calling: “I would never be considered a dirtbag or bum. The writer is an idiot.”
1% Paddlers who got the environmental
message: “The article is about kayakers not recognizing their economic power. What's wrong with that?”
10 | ADVENTURE KAYAK 1% Paddlers with a sense of
humor: “I had to spend this much money to be a dirtbag?”
Former Sea Kayaker editor Christopher Cunningham is taking leave of our Reflections column. “As the editor of Small Boats Monthly, WoodenBoat magazine’s new digital publication, my focus has turned to other boats,” Cunningham says of his departure.
A longtime paddler of traditional skin-on- frame kayaks, he has always been intrigued by do-it-yourself boat building. “Having admired WoodenBoat for 35 years,” he continues, “serendipity has brought me back to a familiar path.” While we would like to thank Cunningham for the many contributions he’s made to sea kayaking, he says, “I’m grateful to Adventure Kayak for easing the transition after the close of Sea Kayaker. It’s now time for me to devote my full attention to this decades-long passion.” Reflections stays on the West Coast for 2015, with Portland, Oregon, writer Neil Schulman taking the helm. Turn to page 34 for his brief history of kayaking conservation.
