The opportunity was not wast-
ed. Hyden and Bourne came out of the qualifi er to win the FIVB Berlin Grand Slam in June and authored a 13-match win streak (tops on the world tour in 2014) between the Berlin and Stavanger events. They moved up to the No. 6 ranking on the FIVB Tour. The teams of Ryan Doherty/
Nick Lucena, Casey Patterson/ Jake Gibb and Todd Rogers/Theo Brunner also reached the podium on the men’s side – the fi rst time in the history of the FIVB Tour so many American teams wore medals during a grueling FIVB schedule. Sean Scott, USA Volleyball manager of Beach National Teams,
said the competition among the men’s teams was making them all better. “It’s been a great year for the men when you exhibit that type of depth,” he said. “I am hoping one or two women’s teams step up to create the same situation next season.” The big steps in 2014 have been the footprints of Kerri Walsh
Jennings and April Ross, veterans with three golds and one silver Olympic medal between them. The pair claimed four FIVB titles

in 2014 (more than any other international team) and won every AVP event as well (seven total in their fi rst full season together). “I remember when I came back after I had Sundance,” said
Walsh Jennings referring to the birth of her second child. “The game had changed. It was way more physical. Before, it was a lot of fi nesse and shooting, and it became physical all of a sudden. I remember I said to Marcio (Sicoli), ‘I’ve been playing this game wrong my whole career.’ He said, ‘What are you talking about? The game changes – you change with it.’ And that was a huge revelation to me. Change is good. My sports psychologist says, ‘If you’re being made uncomfortable, it’s OK. You’re going to grow from it. So just accept it, put your heart into it and go.’”
