Sensor Applications Support the Internet of Tings for


Smart Buildings and Smart Transport

Te Internet of Tings (IoT) is quickly creating a major opportunity for many kinds of sensors, from accelerometers to strain gages, to magnetometers, to gyros, to pressure sensors, to chemical and biosensors. Cisco IBSG predicts that there will be 25 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020. A recent report by Gartner Research has projected the value of the total number of sensors to support the IoT to grow from $1.3 billion in 2014 to over $10.1 billion by 2020, constituting a CAGR of 41.7%. [1]. Nowhere is this need for sensors more significant than in ‘smart’ buildings and ‘smart’ transport, which we will call the ‘built infrastructure’. From the monitoring of structural elements in the built infrastructure i.e. roads, dams, tunnels, pipelines, levees to the monitoring of traffic on roadways and parking on city streets, IoT solutions are becoming ubiquitous.
