The combined biomass heat and power plant, which provides about 4% of the current demand in Wiesbaden, is designed for power generation and district heat. For this purpose, untreated biomass and wood waste (category A I – A III; A IV in small quantities), mostly bulky waste from the Rhine-Main area, are used.


The high pressure steam generated in the boiler plant is fed to the steam turbine driving a generator to generate electricity. Further energy is recovered from the low pressure exhaust steam from the turbine as it passes through condensers to generate district heating piped to homes in the area.


Automation and process control of the plant is handled by Mitsubishi Electric’s PMSXpro distributed control system (DCS), complying with state-of-the-art technology and MELSEC Q Series redundant automation stations to provide 99.99% of automation availability and realise the high requirements of the TRD 604, 72 hours unmonitored steam boiler plant. The entire system was supplied and engineered by Mitsubishi Electric’s subsidiary company ME-Automation Projects GmbH, with central control room operations and process management.
