Kiddush!


One of the three ways we celebrate Shabbat is doing the process of Kiddush!


On Friday night, when Shabbat begins, the Kiddush ceremony is carried out before sitting


down to the Shabbat meal. A cup of wine is filled and held in the hand by the (bracha) is recited: ברןך person presiding, usually the father of the house. Then the Kiddush


Whilst the father of the house is saying the Kiddush prayers he should be wearing a kipper and so should he rest of the boys in the house. This is just to show a sign of respect. Married women should also cover their hair with a headscarf or towel. In order to for fill the mitzvah of doing Kiddush, one should drink about I cup of grape juice (or wine) as supposed to a little drop.


Kiddush has to be made before eating the meal and ideally once the father of the house has come home from Shul. Many have the custom to sit whilst doing Kiddush however there are also lots of traditions where people stand whilst doing Kiddush. It’s up to you whether you stand or sit, just follow you family tradition! If you don’t have wine or grape juice on Friday night, Kiddush should be recited on the bread and he should keep his hands on the bread (bracha) for bread (challah) כהבר throughout the Kiddush, although there is a separate
