Many people are reluctant to give hugs or shake hands. Churches and mosques are also bat- tling superstition. Traditional heal- ers or herbalists use ritual and herbal remedies to treat people in areas where suspicion of modern medicine persists. Now governments and an umbrella group of churches are turn- ing to healers to spread the word that there is no cure for the disease, and are leading education and sensitiza- tion efforts among communities.

Aid for Iraq ACT Alliance, an international humanitarian and development net-
work to which the ELCA belongs, provided $1 million for shelter, food, water and more for internally dis- placed people in northern Iraq. The militant group Islamic State has taken over portions of Iraq’s north and west, particularly targeting minori- ties such as Yazidis and Christians.
S. Sudan violence While the Lutheran World Federa- tion continues to work elsewhere in South Sudan, it evacuated its staff from the country’s Upper Nile State after the targeted killing of at least five aid workers in Bunj on Aug. 5. Eberhard Hitzler, director of the LWF Department for World Service, said the federation condemns the loss of life for all civilians as well as
