and broadens their networks to Ivy League institutions in the US.”

Kelly also suggests prospective students to look for programs where they can benefit from the wisdom in the room.

“We require all our MBA students to have had at least four years experience in management before they enrol, so peer-to-peer learning and networking is a reality. Feedback from graduates is that this is of benefit to them in their careers.”

Many employers value real-life experiences gained by MBA students via business school partnerships with the not-for-prof t sector.

At the University of Sydney, eMBA students recently teamed up with the Windgap Foundation, a social enterprise dedicated to supporting people with intellectual disabilities to help develop a more sustainable business model.

“The primary focus was to teach the importance of management across functions and breaking down of silos. Working in the not-for-prof t sector really brings that to life for the students,” said Dr Leanne Cutcher, who is from the University of Sydney Business School.

Meanwhile, MBA students at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) work with a social enterprise to analyse its business model, review market research and look at ways to make it more attractive to institutional and private investors.

The program pilot was with Australia’s oldest charity, The Benevolent Society focusing on a program, which uses the latest neuroscience techniques to help disadvantaged children overcome learning difficulties.

“Students get an invaluable experience as well as offering social enterprises access to cost-effective advice they might not otherwise afford,” says Roy Green, dean of the UTS Business School. “The students do real work with a real impact.”
