potentially at a price closer to the real interest rate if the sector is deregulated – they will tend to be a bit more cautious in terms of cost and value.”

McCrindle predicts students will increasingly look to future proof their careers by choosing postgraduate qualifications that directly channel into a profession.

Data from the ABS and Graduate Careers Australia suggests industries such as urban development and health offer a good return on education investment because a high percentage of graduates can find work in their field of study.

“While graduates in areas such as surveying and regional planning find jobs in their field quite quickly, it’s a different story in the social sciences. Postgraduate students will be more and more mindful of these trends into the future.”

Many older people will enroll in postgraduate qualifications purely for the love of learning, says McCrindle.

“In the past the only reason you’d pursue a postgraduate qualification was to advance your career. Now we will see more people engage in them for personal as well as professional reasons.”

McCrindle says many baby boomers never had the opportunity to study at a higher level and with time and money on their side they are being inspired to do so later in life.

“Social media has broadened our exposure to what others are doing with their lives. Older people see their children and the other people in their networks achieving postgraduate degrees and they think ‘I can do that!’ Having people around you who are engaged in postgraduate study reenergises people and inspires them to consider it for themselves.”

In the past the only reason you’d pursue a postgraduate degree was to advance your career. Now we will see more people do them for personal, as well as professional, reasons.
