Elvis Presley in 1956

Q: What’s the oldest op- erating roller coaster in America? —Bill C., Miami A: That honor goes to the Leap-the-Dips coaster in Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pa., which has operated nearly continuously since 1902. Leap may seem tame next to today’s thrill rides (its biggest dip is nine feet; Six Flags’ Goliath boasts a 180-foot drop), but its historical charm still draws crowds. See more of America’s oldest coasters at parade.com/coaster.

Leap still thrills after 112 years.

Q: How many people visit Graceland each year? —Stephen S., Mesa, Ariz. A:More than 600,000 fans flock to the King’s iconic Memphis mansion every year, typically making it the second-most-visited pri- vate home in the country, after the White House. The most popular attraction? Elvis’s signature pink 1955 Cadillac. See another piece of Elvis history, a letter he wrote to Richard Nixon, at parade.com/elvis.

Does Miranda Lambert think it’s harder for wom- en to succeed in country music? —Cassandra M., Austin

A: “It hasn’t been harder for me,” says Lambert, 30. “I’ve been fortunate, but I like to lift women up in any way I can.” Like with “Somethin’ Bad”—her girl-power duet with Carrie Underwood. “It’s really cool to collaborate with another female artist—it doesn’t hap- pen that often.” Women are “absolutely” gaining ground in mainstream country music, Lambert says, but still, “there’s not that many of us. We’ve all got to stick together.”

JAMES PATTERSON

Do you prefer writing for kids or adults? I’m actually pretty funny, and I don’t get to write funny in adult books. Plus, I never really grew up, so that makes kids’ books better for me! Where do you write? Out of my home in Palm Beach, Fla. I write long- hand on a legal pad. It drives my son crazy, but I’ve been pretty successful with that little pencil.

Did your son Jack, 16, inspire you to write for kids?Yeah. He wasn’t a big reader when he was younger, and one summer, my wife and I said, “You don’t have to do the lawn, but you have to read every

day.” Parents have to make reading a rule and it will become a great habit. You started working for an ad agency in the ’70s in NYC. Was it anything like Mad Men? Well, I did look a lot like Don Draper

[laughs]— that’s about the only similarity!

Q: As a mom, was it hard for Jessica Alba to step back into her sexy role in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For?—Rose M., Tulsa A: “No, not at all,” says the 33-year-old star. “I think if anything I was more prepared. When the first movie debuted in 2005, “I was a girl, sort of like a deer caught in headlights.” But after two kids and nearly 10 years, “I feel like a woman.” Go to parade.com/workout to find out how Alba got in shape for the role with moves by her trainer, Jen- nifer “JJ Dancer” Johnson.
