ROOMY, WEATHER-PROOF TENTS TO GO FROM BASECAMP TO BACKCOUNTRY

TN3 [1] If a little elbowroom is what you’re after, the TN3 tent delivers for paddling duos. This three-person, two- door tent offers 40 square feet of floor space for just five pounds. A mesh interior offers an unobstructed view of the sky, and if you’re unsure what the evening holds, we love that we can attach the fly, tie it back partway and then fully deploy it from the comfort of our sleeping bags if it starts raining overnight. The TN3 folds into a compact square package, instead of the traditional tube shape, which takes a bit of getting used to when packing up. For those who are keen on in-tent organization, be warned that interior pocket space is at a premium. $299.95 | www.kelty.com

EUREKA TARON 3 [2]

Six pounds and part of Eureka’s durable performance series, the Taron’s low profile and cheery orange color make it perfect for foul weather. Thanks to Eureka’s distinctive venting technology, as well as hooded fly vents and mesh panels in the tent walls, we found dampness stays outside. Two large bottom-opening doors ease entry and can be rolled up and left open. While the vestibules are large, we loved that one features a strut pole that increases vertical space. A bathtub floor design wraps up and around the sides of the tent to protect against splashing and standing water. Six interior pockets and a detachable gear loft keep essentials organized.

MARMO T LIMESTONE [3]

A four-person tent perfect for families, the Limestone is a great choice whether traveling in the backcountry or chilling in the campground. Sturdy and hassle-free, color- coded poles and tags make pitching the Limestone a breeze. We’re big fans of the extra headroom—the Limestone is five feet tall inside so even adults can stand up and get changed with minimal hunching. Nifty vents on the fly and a mesh inner body let plenty of air in so things don't smell like Dad’s feet. This is the heaviest of the tents in our lineup at 10 pounds and the roominess makes up for it—the interior of the tent is 60 square feet and the huge vestibule adds another 21 square feet. Rest assured there’s lots of room for the whole clan.

MOUNTAIN HARD W ARE OPTIC 3.5 [4]

The Optic 3.5 was a hit at last year’s Outdoor Retailer show, and it’s no wonder—the extra square footage and open, airy architecture has made it one of our favorites too. The Optic offers a new twist on traditional design with full-size doors on adjacent sides that zip away to create an open vista. Tiebacks for the vestibule allow campers to customize the view up to 180 degrees. Dual vestibules also create a drier entry into the tent and tons of room for gear storage. With 45 square feet of floor space, the Optic 3.5 easily fits two campers, the family hound and whatever else you want to bring along. Even better, it weights just six pounds. —KP
